Arvindh Shanmugam, as Founder Consultant of Akasha Consultancy, since November 2013, has been involved with Govin Academy, Singapore in building relationships with right-minded individuals and institutions to create a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem (Biotechnology & Bio-medical Equipment) in the country for improving the nation’s economy. Currently, a member of Institutional Ethical Committee of Chennai Meenakshi Multispecialty Hospital, Chennai & Board of Studies of Women’s Christian College, Chennai.
Arvindh served Ramachandra Innovis, a research commercial wing of Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, Chennai as General Manager (R&D) and was responsible for the overall functioning of the SBU in its day to day activities as well as actively involved in its ambitious program to become a leading IP based Contract / Clinical Research Organization.
Arvindh was the first scientist to join Institute of Life Sciences, Hyderabad (currently DRILS – Dr. Reddy’s Institute of Life Sciences), a public private partnership entity. In an effort to build the institute, in collaboration with Prof. Seyed Hasnain (former Vice Chancellor, University of Hyderabad), he was involved in the initiation of a virtual Centre of Excellence in Tuberculosis (with 6 other institutions UoH, CDFD, Lepra BPRC, BMHRC and Government Chest Hoapital) at ILS. Later as the Executive Coordinator of the CoE (a honorary position), he was involved in the establishment of a BSL3 Facility in the University of Hyderabad campus.
He gained substantial experience in institution building, corporate planning and development during his tenure at ILS. He held various responsibilities ranging from academic coordination (PhD – Chemical Biology program at ILS) to liaisoning with various government agencies and departments and served in various committees (Policy planning, advisory, monitoring and statutory) of the institute and University of Hyderabad. He also was involved in the Management of the institute in various capacities ranging from Project Management, Corporate Governance, Business Development, Fund raising, IPR Management and industry liaison.
As a NIH Post Doctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School Public Health, Baltimore, USA, he was involved in research in the field of immunology and molecular virology of HIV aimed at 1) Developing vaccines using heterologous vector systems 2) Protective efficacy testing of HIV vaccines 3) Elucidating the early molecular changes when viruses change their host preferences using SIV as a model and 4) Dissecting the cellular immune response to HIV using Cytometric Bead Array.
Arvindh, a Medical Microbiologist from Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, obtained his PhD (Molecular Microbiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis) Tuberculosis Research Centre, Chennai. He also served the Department of Clinical Heamatology, CMC Hospital, where he was involved in setting up of an Automated Sequencing facility and DNA based HLA typing for aplastic aneamic patients of the BMT unit in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Pathology.
